In English drama, a domestic tragedy is defined as a tragedy in which the tragic protagonist is ordinary middle-class or lower class individuals. The definition I will use is the event of great suffering, destruction, and distress that occurs to the protagonist or tragic hero. A Raisin in the Sun falls under domestic tragedy with the status and circumstances that the poor African American family with the constant struggle versus social roles and white America. Throughout the play, the Younger family has many hardships and difficult decisions come up. Hamlet would not fall under a domestic tragedy with the family being of kingly ranks as well as their downfall and personal matters. The other struggle comes with Walter’s obsession for money using his rich-quicks schemes. She entrusted Walter with the $6,500 that he later completely loses. In the end she is happy with Walter’s better decisions at the end, of the play. The relationship status of Beneatha Younger causes her much distress as her rich boyfriend George which her and her family could use the money, but on the other side, she finds favor with Asagai as he encourages her to do what she wants in life. Overall Asagai makes her feel happy and is whom she wants to be with. Beneatha has just one huge conflict with her mother over religion and her faith. Separate note mama completely understands her decision to be with Asagai over George so all is good. The marriage problems between Ruth Younger and her husband Walter Younger are obviously taking a toll on her. It seems as many times that she is depressed and filled with stress. Further, through the play, we later find out she is pregnant. With the struggling money situation going through the house she is faced the consideration of abortion. The Younger family as it appears could in no way afford another mouth to feed with the already low income coming in. To make matters worse abortions are illegal and dangerous.
